Overview
Until recently humans have been earthbound. That is no longer the case. That fact along with scientific advances such as artificial intelligence, Internet cellular technology, multiple uses of nuclear energy, and DNA engineering, dramatically alter the arena of life for humans. Humanity is entering its most monumental transition in history. We may now become inter-planetary beings with potential for technologically altered physical and mental capabilities through DNA engineering as we are almost continually inundated with media-based influences. What does this mean for humanity? Will it require a new mindset for humans to survive and find meaning and purpose in this uncertain futuristic world? Might humans become so wedded to technology that they lose their independence and personal identity letting others and overwhelming forces dictate their thoughts and actions? Already countless youths and adults have become pawns of news media propaganda, addictive gaming, social media, pornography, and other powerful influences. Rather than becoming more knowledgeable through unlimited instant information, many have given up thinking on their own or even searching for meaning and purpose beyond instant gratification. Growing numbers of lost souls are losing initiative turning to drugs and alcohol and now passively ascribe to whatever they allow to influence them. To live productive and satisfying lives, people must counter balance the role and influence of technology and pervasive media. Remaining fully human and self-sufficient in a future that may discourage critical thinking and autonomy requires resilient independent thought. Fulfilling lives will never be a product of letting others do our thinking for us. Here we examine how seventeen remarkable individuals used their faith, rational problem-solving skills and courage to lead lives of great significance and fulfillment. The qualities and principles they displayed will have great worth regardless of what occurs in our future. This is so because though times and circumstances may change, what the human heart requires for fulfillment and meaning does not. Following profiles of each person, short essays expand upon subjects relating to the great outcomes of each person's life. Such outcomes will have value for each of us regardless of what a technology dominated future may hold. Additionally, questions for introspection on the subjects addressed in each chapter are included.

Jim has served on the faculty of the Michigan State University Graduate School of Business and at the University of Colorado. He has had lifelong active interests in science, psychology and history.
