Holiday family dramas can be divided into two categories: those that inspire you with their uplifting poignancy (like Meet Me in St. Louis or It's a Wonderful Life) and others that leave you thinking, Well, at least my family isn't that horrible (think Home Alone or Home for the Holidays). Unquestionably falling into the latter group is The Family Stone. Meredith (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Everett (Dermot Mulroney) are shown leaving for his family's home to celebrate Christmas at the beginning of the film. He reassures his apprehensive fiancee that his family would love him. She is meeting the family for the first time. Oh, the innocent, unfortunate folks. Have they never attended a holiday celebration of a movie family before?
