OverviewOn 19 March 1947, Denis E. Hurley OMI was appointed vicar apostolic of Natal. At the age of thirty-one, he was then the youngest Catholic bishop in the world. When the Hierarchy was established in 1951, he become the first Catholic archbishop of Durban. As a pastor, an anti-apartheid activist, an ecumenist and a liturgist, Archbishop Hurley has left a deep mark on the church and society of his times. His reputation has gone far beyond the boundaries of South Africa, particularly after the Second Vatican Council, in which he participated actively. It was largely due to his influence that the South African Catholic Bishops Conference, which elected him several times as president, stood firm, with increasing determination, against apartheid. To commemorate the half century of this eventful episcopate this selection of Archbishop Hurley's texts was presented to the public. The list - probably incomplete - of his publications includes ninety-nine items. This volume reprints, in chronological order, twenty-two articles of chapters of books written between 1960 and 1996 and an English translation of several speeches delivered during the Second Vatican Council. Two biographical essays and a bibliography complete the volume.
