Overview

This book is a call for action to face up to climate change. McManners argues that that there is a way out of the world's climate emergency which needs much greater realism than the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The changing climate is leading to record temperatures and increasing frequency of storms, but this is just the commencement of dangerous consequences to come. It has become abundantly clear that a bold approach is needed to pull back from catastrophe. People like Greta Thunberg should be admired for speaking up, and we should understand why organisations such as Extinction Rebellion exist. However, protest without a clear agenda for change has little lasting impact. The case for action is overwhelming, argued eloquently by David Attenborough and other environmentalists. The world's response must be real action, not empty promises. This book provides the manifesto that protesters and environmentalists need. It states clearly the need to close down fossil fuel without delay. Individuals making change within their own lives will make little difference. Author Information

Dr Peter McManners is a passionate advocate for a more sustainable world. He graduated in Engineering Science from Durham University and later took an MSc in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) at Edinburgh University. His first career was in the British Army, where his last post was as a Lt Col and Head of Operations Division for the UK Defence Geographic and Imagery Agency. After completing an MBA, he had roles as Chief Operating Officer involved with incubating high technology companies and Chief Executive in the not-for-profit sector. He argued for developing and investing in green technology before such ideas were mainstream. He now leads the Sustainability and Scenario Analysis modules at Henley Business School, University of Reading. His doctorate focussed on sustainability economics. His current research is looking at radical measures to reduce the environmental impact of society and the industrial economy. His previous books include: - Adapt and Thrive: The Sustainable Revolution - Green Outcomes in the Real World - Corporate Strategy in the Age of Responsibility - Victim of Success: Civilisation at Risk McManners has written FUCC for the widest possible audience - everyone on this shared planet - and presents a powerful case to act boldly and swiftly. The illustrator is the author's son Thomas McManners. Thomas excelled at art in school but he decided to study Mechanical Engineering at the University of Bath. His research into renewable energy and electric cars gave him the background to join in the climate debate around the family dinner table. As the ideas in the book took shape, he commented that our continued use of fossil fuel is ""like setting fire to the furniture in your own house"". He dabbles in drawing cartoons and was commissioned to draw a set to bring a lighter touch to the serious message of the book.
