Overview

"John Lennon once stated, ""I met Paul, and said, 'Do you wanna join me band', and then George joined, and then Ringo joined. We were just a band that made it very, very big, that's all. We were four guys."" ...or were there only four? When one considers The Beatles' early history, there are several names naturally come to mind, like The Quarrymen, Stuart Sutcliffe and Pete Best. However, the story of the evolution of The Beatles from The Quarrymen to The Fab Four is about more than just the musicians in those groups. Liverpool author David Bedford, who lives near Penny Lane, has uncovered people like George Smith, Joe Ankrah, Red Carter, Zancs Logie, Ian James, Marie Maguire, Colin Manley and Arthur Pendleton who are all important to the Beatles' story as well. Featured in The Fab one hundred and Four are: ?the previously unknown schoolfriend who gave John his first guitar and changed Beatles history. ?the first published photographs of Silver Beatles' drummer Norman Chapman. ?the real influences in their formative years – family members, schoolmates, mentors and musical contemporaries. ?profiles of every musician who was a member of the group – from The Quarrymen to The Beatles – from 1956 through 1962. Whether they were in the group for a night, a week, a year, two years or more, they are all mentioned here. ?all the musicians and performers who shared the stage with the boys as part of a single act. ?Over 570 photographs, some previously unseen and many rare. The Fab Four becomes The Fab one hundred and Four! These one hundred and four friends, family and musicians get a long overdue credit for their contributions to the musical development of the greatest pop group of all time: The Beatles. With 400 pages, this is the most in-depth look at the musical period of evolution of The Beatles. Maybe John Lennon should have said: ""We were just one hundred and four guys."""

Reviews

Check out The Fab One Hundred and Four, a new book written by author/ Beatles scholar David Bedford. Exhaustively researched and illustrated with terrific (and rare) photos, the book tills the fertile soil of the band's early history by examining the Liverpool musicians who influenced John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr ? culminating in the onslaught of Beatlemania following their Sullivan Show appearance on CBS. - Michael Starr, New York Post 5 out of 5 stars! 'The Fab One Hundred and Four' is an excellent addition to a Beatles fan's coffee table but also an amazing reference guide to the twists and turns, additions and subtractions, of the band's evolution from the Quarrymen to the final four we know as the Fab Four. Bedford, through his research, and interviews with each of these people, has shed new light on Beatles history and expanded our understanding of how they began. He certainly has given each of them their well-deserved badge of honor for the ages. - Examiner.com A treasure chest of research and a visual delight, this will prove to be a work no Beatles fan should be without. - Bill Harry, founder of Mersey Beat David Bedford, the contemporary scribe of Liverpool life, has done it again. This book, graphically supreme as Liddypool, takes you closer to the way it was. This is the real thing by a man who knows the famed musical and social history of his city like few others. His pride in Liverpool is contagious. - Larry Kane, author of When They Were Boys David Bedford's latest Beatles book, The Fab One Hundred and Four, is a delightful and essential read. Just when you thought everything's been said about the Beatles, and there wasn't much left to learn about the history of the group, David delivers the goods by exploring a whole new angle -- looking at all the people, some known and some hardly known, that played a key role in the evolution of the group right up to the point where they were John, Paul, George, & Ringo, on the brink of super-stardom. - Ken Michaels www.Kenmichaelsradio.com Just when you think there can't possibly be another book worth reading about the Beatles, along comes another. This book has quality as well as quantity. David Bedford has excelled himself. - Rod Davis, The Quarrymen 5 out of 5 stars! Author Information

David Bedford, author of Liddypool, is a life-long Beatles fan who grew up in the Dingle, Liverpool, at the bottom of the street where Ringo Starr was born; attended the same school as the famous drummer - though many years later - and has been involved as a parent and governor at Dovedale School, where John Lennon and George Harrison attended; he has lived by Penny Lane for 20 years. Bedford is also a feature writer for The British Beatles Fan Club since 2000. He has been interviewed on BBC Radio and several national British newspapers about his knowledge of the Beatles. He was chosen by Paul McCartney's production team to lead and direct the film crew around McCartney's childhood haunts for the pre-show film on his Back in the World tour, and acted as consultant for the Beatles exhibition at the new Museum of Liverpool.
