Overview
This volume will be the first of its kind devoted exclusively to the venerable F4U Corsair in the Korean War. Some 26 US Navy squadrons saw action with the aircraft during this conflict, the vast majority of these units flying from aircraft carriers sailing off the Korean coast. The Marine Corps also committed six squadrons to the war, these being based ashore near the frontline. Aside from flying myriad close air support missions for troops in the field, a small number of Corsairs were also used to combat the night nuisance raiders sortied by the North Korean air force over UN lines after dark. A number of Po-2 biplanes were shot down, and the US Navy's sole ace of the Korean War was F4U-5N Corsair pilot Lt Guy Bordelon. His story is profiled in this volume along with dozens of other Corsair pilots who the author has interviewed for this work. Their harrowing combat accounts bring the history to life for the reader as do the vast number of private photographs that illustrate their accounts and have never been published before. Finally, its comprehensive appendices will detail every unit deployment by carrier, air group, Corsair model and tail code. A detailed list noting every Corsair lost in the war (tail number, pilot, date of loss and unit) will also be included making this the definitive account for anyone interested in the often overlooked air war in Korea.
