Exposition of the Sermon on the Mount: Socinus's Exposition of Matthew 5-7

Overview

Exposition of the Sermon on the Mount - Socinus's Commentary on Matthew 5-7 The Sermon on the Mount is regarded as the very heart of Jesus's teaching. Fausto Socinus (1539-1604), one of the most significant theologians of the Reformation era, interpreted it with a philological rigor and intellectual consistency unusual for his century-verse by verse, chapter by chapter. What makes Socinus's exposition distinctive Socinus does not read the Sermon on the Mount as a pious appeal, but as a coherent discourse of Christ whose inner logic must be uncovered. He begins with the Greek text: What does makarios-""blessed""-really mean? What is meant by ""poverty in spirit""? How do the Beatitudes in Matthew relate to those in Luke? He compares Greek, Syriac, and Latin manuscripts, identifies later textual additions, and distinguishes prophetic speech from mere wisdom teaching. The result is not a dogmatic treatise, but a sustained, thoughtful wrestling with the text. A work left unfinished Socinus was unable to complete his commentary: the present text breaks off in the middle of chapter 6 of the Gospel of Matthew. Chapter 7-the passages on judging, prayer, and the narrow way-remains without commentary. What we possess, therefore, is a fragment, yet an extraordinarily rich one: hundreds of pages of meticulous exposition showing how a 16th-century thinker examined Scripture with philological precision and theological boldness. It is precisely this unfinished character that lends the work its honesty-the text breaks off, as so much in Socinus's life had to be written under pressure and in exile. Who this book is for This book is intended for readers who wish to understand the Sermon on the Mount more deeply: those interested in theology, students of the Bible, and anyone who seeks to explore the history of scriptural interpretation beyond confessional boundaries-and for all who share Socinus's conviction that no doctrine should be exempt from the test of reason. ""Test everything; hold fast what is good."" - 1 Thessalonians 5:21
