Table of ContentsReviews'Exile and Displacement' is a fascinating collection of reflections by refugees and survivors from Nazi-occupied Europe on a relatively underexplored part of the war experience: exile and displacement. What does it mean to become American after being so Jewish and European at home before the Nazis' rise to power? What was it like actually living under the shadow of the swastika on an every day basis? At what point did it become clear that emigrating would be the only answer? And just how hard was it to emigrate, on both practical and emotional levels? These wonderfully insightful meditations add immeasurably to our understanding of how life and life's biggest decisions unfolded a day at a time under the most harrowing circumstances. (James E. Young, Department of Judaic and Near Eastern Studies, University of Massachusetts, Amherst) Each of these thirteen accounts presents an entirely different and fascinating experience of persecution, escape, confrontation with a foreign environment, and the beginning of a new life. All the contributors to this volume were children or adolescents at the time. Their fears, struggles, and ultimate achievements make this a unique, and, finally, an optimistic book, a testimony to the triumph of survival.
