Was it a' sense of this inferiority which induced him to listen to the proposals of his many English admirers, the chief among them the Earl of Arundel, that he should come to England and place himself under the protection of Charles I., who was eager to accord him patronage? At any rate he accepted the invitation, and in April 1632, arrived in London and took up his residence in a house in Blackfriars, being also provided with summer apartments in the King's House at Eltham. Charles immediately made him Principal Painter in Ordinary to their Majesties, and on J uly 5, three months after his arrival, conferred upon him the honour of knighthood.
