INTRODUCTION The chapter presents an introduction to the research work carried out as part of this thesis. It first discusses a current scenario in software development and elaborates on the need for a new approach to evolving software development. The chapter provides an introduction to evolving software development which is developed using the software component: Agent, which is the topic of the research work. It discusses the situation where it becomes necessary that software evolves itself for handling unforeseen problems and events. The chapter defines an entity Agent which is the main entity of evolving software development. It also discusses the properties of an agent and the working of an agent. A detailed discussion of the literature survey on agents and their architecture is presented here. The literature survey also addresses application domains that can be developed using agent technology.
