OverviewThis volume is a collection of papers produced within the framework of the Italian National Antarctic Research Programme (PNRA) on the monitoring and control of environmental contamination. The volume represents a contribution of the PNRA to the study of planetary contamination and to the understanding of the processes of global change. The research focuses on the measurement and analysis of trace elements and organic micropollutants in the following matrices: snow/firn, seawater, soils, sediments, suspended particulate matter, pack ice, atmosphere, and biota. The results presented extend beyond the development of specific analytical methodologies, to explicitly tackle significant environmental issues concerning global changes. Particularly relevant are the results concerning time changes of CFCs in the troposphere and lead concentration in Antarctic snow in Victoria Land, the presence of organic micropollutants in various Antarctica matrices, and the seasonal evolution of trace elements and organics in seawater. Table of ContentsTrace metals and minor elements: non-sea-salt contribution of some chemical species to the snow composition at Terra Nova Bay (Antarctica); air-sea exchange - sea salt and microcomponents in Antarctic snow distribution of 226Ra in the Ross Sea - preliminary results for the study of the gas exchange at the air-ocean interface; cadmium, lead, selenium and vanadium distribution along the water column in the Antarctic Ross Sea - salt content sources in surface Antarctic snow; radioactive and stable isotopes in abiotic and biotic components of Antarctic ecosystems surrounding the Italian base. Organic compounds: characterization of humics isolated from the Antarctic soils; characteristics of sedimentary humic acids in the continental margin of the Ross Sea (Antarctica); organic compounds present on the suspended particulate matter sampled at the Terra Nova Bay in Antarctica; organic compounds in environmental Antarctic matrices - pack-ice and sea water; polychlorobiphenyls in sediment, soil and sea water samples from Antarctica; halocarbons in Antarctic surface waters and snow; the effect of seasonal pack ice melting on the sea water polychlorobiphenyl contents at Gerlache Inlet and Wood Bay (Ross Sea-Antarctica). Temporal trends: variations of mercury and selenium concentrations in Adamussium Colbecki and Pagothenia Bernachii from Terra Nova Bay (Antarctica) during a five year period; evolution of Cd and Pb in Antarctic coastal seawater; recent decrease of lead content in Antarctic snow detected by differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry; multiparametric approach for chemical dating of snow layers; new assessment of tropospheric CFCs in Antarctica.ReviewsAuthor InformationTab Content 6Author Website:Countries AvailableAll regions |
