Every Student’s Right to Write: Classroom Writing Rooted in Community

Overview

Young students deserve writing spaces that center community while working to nurture the heart of the writer. But how can we center their right to write despite the constant pulls from initiatives, curriculum shifts, and increased momentum around censorship? How can we intentionally reflect on our personal experiences with writing as well as our classroom practices to enhance our collective work alongside young writers? In what ways can we invite our learning communities to authentically participate in the decision making process within their classroom writing spaces? No matter what your writing curriculum is, Every Student’s Right to Write: Classroom Writing Rooted in Community will show you how to establish writing environments where students engage wholeheartedly in important community work as they experience first hand the possibilities writing holds as a place to process, discover, imagine, center compassion, and take action. Along the way, reflective prompts, classroom examples, and use-tomorrow ideas offer readers a companion resource specifically written to help them nurture writing instruction from a student and community centered position by: ● inviting teachers to engage in ongoing reflection about their classroom writing practice, ● featuring classroom strategies and ideas to support the cocreation of an inviting, supportive, and engaging writing community, ● suggesting pathways to support shared decision making with young writers, ● encouraging writing communities to advocate for their writing spaces. This book shows how the power of writing can flourish in learning communities that honor and celebrate all students when we collectively work to center their right to write while nurturing the visionary in each of our young writers.
