He was awarded his PhD from the University of Leeds and his thesis was published by Pen & Sword in 2010 as Churchill’s Spearhead; The Development of Britain’s Airborne Forces during World War II . He has also contributed to A.L. Hargreaves, P.J. Rose and M.C. Ford’s (ed.) Allied Fighting Effectiveness in North Africa and Italy, 1942-1945 (Leiden: Brill, 2014) with ‘“When Opportunity Arises”: British Airborne Operations in the Mediterranean, 1941-1944’. John now works as an independent historical writer and lecturer on 20th century military subjects. He is also frequently employed as a battlefield guide - leading groups across the First and Second World War battlefields of Europe. John is also associated with the History Department in the Faculty of Arts, Business and Applied Social Science at University Campus Suffolk.
