OverviewMany of the major oil producing provinces of the world are coincident with regions of former evaporite deposition. Because of this correlation, geologists and geophysicists involved in exploration and basin analysis require a sound working knowledge of evaporites, and there are instances where evaporites are so intimately associated with hydrocarbon reservoirs that their physicochemical properties need to be understood by reservoir engineers.
