Evaluation and Modeling of Next-Generation Mobile Signal Propagation

Overview

Communications now a days has become a very important aspect and is crucial to the development of a nation. Communication is done through many ways i.e., internet, mobiles, etc. This involves exchange of information and data, and this may occur over short distances or large distances through a telephone line, satellite link, internet etc. Wireless communication refers to the transfer of information/ using electromagnetic waves over the atmosphere unlike the wired communication which uses guided structure. Among many wireless communication systems, mobile communications is the fastest growing sector. In mobile communications the emitted electromagnetic waves from transmitting antenna often do not directly reach the receiving antenna because of many obstacles in between the transmitter and the receiver blocking the Line-of-Sight (LoS) path. During the propagation of the radio signal through the medium of transmission, it accounts for all possible propagation paths as well as the effects of absorption, attenuation, reflection losses, scintillation, delay spread, angular spread, Doppler spread, dispersion, interference, motion, and fading. The received wave is superposition of waves coming from many different directions due to reflection, diffraction, and scattering caused by buildings, trees, hills, and others in urban and suburban areas. These waves travel from transmitter to receiver over number of paths and this propagation is referred to as multipath propagation. This multipath propagation causes fluctuations in the received signal's amplitude and phase, giving rise to multipath fading. The term fading means the rapid fluctuations in the amplitude or phase of a radio signal.
