OverviewWhen resources in health care are scarce, decisions about the value of counselling have to be taken in a very competitive economic arena. The principles of economic evaluation are not usually a part of counsellor training, but the authors of this book argue that a knowledge and understanding of the basic theory of such evaluation is an essential part of establishing the efficiency of counselling. Written jointly by an experienced counsellor and an economist, this book is intended to help counsellors and service providers carry out simple cost-effectiveness analysis in their own setting, with a good understanding of the purposes, methods and limitations of the tools they are using. In part one, the authors provide a general introduction to economic evaluation of counselling and related psychological interventions. This includes a definition of terms, an outline of the main types and components of evalutation, chapters on objective setting, costs and outcomes and other related issues. Part two concentrates on the practical use of one type of economic evaluation, cost-effectiveness analysis (CEA), providing the reader with worked examples of how it can be applied in different situations.
