Overview

In most Council of Europe member states, active euthanasia or assisting a suicide are illegal. The issue is the subject of a lively debate, both in professional circles and amongst the general public, and two countries, the Netherlands and Belgium, have decided to change their laws to enable doctors to bring a person's life to an end if certain conditions are fulfilled.
