OverviewWe conducted a preliminary study on the establishment of a cancer registry in Senegal over a three-month period from January 1 to March 31, 2010. This was a non-exhaustive study conducted at five healthcare facilities in the city of Dakar (HOGGY, HALD, FANN, HPD, and the Joliot Curie Institute) on adult patients. The objective of this study was to assess the reliability and feasibility of online data recording for cancer patients in order to provide clear recommendations for the launch of the cancer registry in Senegal. At the conclusion of this study, 289 cases were identified, of which 44% (127 cases) were men and 56% (162 cases) were women, with a sex ratio of 0.8. This female predominance is consistent with the literature and is also observed in the registry for the Greater Casablanca region. The primary diagnostic method was predominantly histological, accounting for 76% of cases. Other diagnostic bases included clinical findings, laboratory tests, and radiology, due to the specificity of certain tumor locations as well as the prevalence of clinical suspicion as a diagnostic basis in our healthcare facilities.
