Although this book is intended for qualitative rather than quantitative researchers, it can be quite useful for both types. Several years ago we studied how antiretroviral therapy altered the impact on older age parents with HIV-infected adult children in Thailand. Although we used a closed-ended questionnaire, we conducted conversational style interviews with dyads of parent and HIV-infected child and of both parents. There is no question that had this book been available at the time to guide our research we would have benefited very substantially from it. John Knodel, University of Michigan, emeritus

John Knodel, University of Michigan, emeritus This is an essential book for those who interview. David Morgan expands our thinking on what the interview can be and offers valuable ways of gathering insight from participants. [This book] should be on the bookshelf of anyone who does interviewing. Morgan s expertise in focus group interviewing coupled with his talents in individual interviews allows him to draw upon both domains to highlight a valuable new path for researchers.
