She graduated from Münster University in 1988, completing her Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry at the University of Hamburg in 1991. She then spent a postdoctoral period with S. G. Withers at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver (Canada) before returning to Hamburg. In 2000 she was appointed full professor at the University of Kiel.
