OverviewEssentials of Carotid Duplex Ultrasound provides a practical guide for clinician's to better understand the indications, application and interpretation of CUS using tutorial case examples. In the first section of the book, the editors review the basics of carotid ultrasound, which include the following: appropriate indications for testing; normal anatomy and hemodynamics of the common carotid, internal carotid, external carotid, and vertebral arteries; Imaging protocols for CUS; advantages and limitations. In the second section, a multimedia-based approach using case tutorials (still frames and dynamic loops) addresses CUS application in various carotid artery pathologies, specifically plaque morphology and internal carotid artery stenosis. Examination of the less common pathologies includes common carotid and external carotid artery stenosis, carotid aneurysms, and dissections. A special emphasis is placed on causes of inconsistencies between CUS and angiography, including calcifications, tortuosity, subtotal occlusions, and vascular anomalies. In the final section, the focus is on the application of CUS for surveillance after carotid endarterectomy (CEA) and carotid artery stenting (CAS) also using a case tutorial approach. The editors provide a quiz at the end of each chapter with carotid duplex images (still frames and image loops) to provide an interactive learning process that can be helpful to practicing physicians and to those interested in board certification in Vascular and Endovascular Medicine.
