An antibiotic is a medication or chemical substance that is used to treat or prevent bacterial infections. Antibiotics, also known as antibacterials, are a type of antimicrobial drug used in the treatment and prevention of bacterial infections. They may either kill or inhibit the growth of bacteria. A limited number of antibiotics also possess antiprotozoal activity. Antibiotics are not effective against viruses such as the common cold or influenza; their inappropriate use allows the emergence of resistant organisms. Antibiotics have been around for thousands of years. The earliest known records of antibiotic use date back to ancient Egypt, where it is believed that garlic and juniper oil were used to treat infections. Ancient Assyrians and Babylonians used a combination of honey, alcohol, and certain plants to make antibiotics.
