Epigenetic Regulations in Plants: Mechanisms, Plant Development and Stress Responses

Overview

This book provides a detailed overview of the significance of epigenetic regulation as an important mechanism underlying the regulation of gene expression in plants. It highlights the role played by epigenetic mechanisms in the overall physiology of plants and how these mechanisms can improve quality traits by conferring tolerance and resistance against abiotic and biotic stresses. The book is organized into four distinct sections, beginning with an introduction to the subject and a generalized discussion on the different epigenetic markers. Chapters then go on to discuss epigenetic responses in model plants including Arabidopsis, rice and cereal crops, and the role epigenetics plays in controlling physiological processes and protection against various forms of stress. The volume introduces readers to the application of epigenetics, providing them with a clear road map to undergo qualitative and quantitative improvement of plant species to enhance productivity and performance. This can be achieved from a better understanding of the different components of epigenetic machinery and chromatin accessibility to transcription factors that regulate the expression of concerned genes. This is an essential read for researchers and scientists working in the fields of plant physiology, molecular biology and biotechnology, as well as related disciplines of biochemistry, agricultural science and botany. It benefits university libraries and research institutes dealing with epigenetics and their applications to improve plant growth, development and quality, and in overcoming different stresses.

Prof. Aryadeep Roychoudhury is currently working as a Professor in the Discipline of Life Sciences, Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi, India. Earlier, he served as an Assistant Professor at the Post Graduate Department of Biotechnology, St. Xavier’s College (Autonomous), Kolkata, West Bengal, India. He earned his B.Sc. (Hons.) in Botany from Presidency College, Kolkata, and M.Sc. in Biophysics and Molecular Biology, University of Calcutta, West Bengal, India. He pursued his doctoral research at Bose Institute, Kolkata and earned his Ph.D. from Jadavpur University, Kolkata, in the area of stress biology in plants. Following his Ph.D. work, he joined the University of Calcutta as a Research Associate (post-doctorate), pursuing translational research on transgenic rice. He is presently involved in active research in the field of abiotic stress responses in plants with perspectives to the physiology, molecular biology, and cell signalling under diverse stress conditions. He has 25 years of research experience in the concerned discipline. He has handled several government-funded projects as principal investigator and supervised five Ph.D. students as principal investigator. Prof. Roychoudhury has published over 290 articles in peer-reviewed journals and chapters in books of international and national repute. He has already edited 16 books with publishers like Wiley, Elsevier, Springer, Taylor & Francis Group, and Nova, and has also handled special issues as Guest Editor for several renowned international journals. He is a regular reviewer of articles in high-impact, international journals, editorial board member of several journals and Life Member of different scientific associations and societies. He is the recipient of the Young Scientist Award 2019, conferred upon him by International Foundation for Environment and Ecology, at the University of Allahabad, Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. He also received the recipient of Distinguished Scientist Award – 2024 conferred upon him recently by the Institute of Ecotoxicology and Environmental Sciences, India.
