Overview

Diabetic neuropathy (DN) is a demonstrable disorder that occurs to peripheral and autonomic nervous systems. DN encompasses a wide heterogeneous group of clinical and subclinical syndromes. It is one of the major long term complication associated with diabetes that can cause considerable morbidity and mortality. The diagnosis of DN can vary significantly. Consequently millions of people with diabetes are affected with DN 50 to 75% of all ulceration and nontrauma amputations are a consequence of diabetic neuropathy, and cause more hospitalizations than all other diabetic complications. Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is often painful and debilitating condition that is caused by damage to any nerve in the peripheral nervous system. It is a family of nerve disorders that are directly caused by diabetic complications. Neuropathy can strike at any time, regardless of age, gender, racial or ethnic background. People with diabetes who have trouble in controlling their blood glucose (or blood sugar) levels, along with high cholesterol, high blood pressure and obesity are at an elevated risk for developing DPN.
