OverviewResearch on the maritime facet of Rome has been evolving in recent years; for a long time studies were based almost exclusively on ancient sources, but recently archaeological work has been showing a new reality that is contributing to a better understanding of the role of ports, navigation and service infrastructures related to the management of the seas in Roman times. These two volumes collect the contributions presented at the Congress ENTRE MARES; Emplacement, infrastructures and organization of Roman ports, held in Irun, in November 2021, whose objective has been to update the available information on Roman ports. The results can be considered as the beginning of this new phase, which is reflected in the multiplication of archaeological records that have been increasing exponentially in recent years and adding dozens of new port testimonies. The first volume presents the communications related to the ports of the Western Mediterranean (25 contributions), North Africa (6 contributions), Red Sea (2 contributions), Eastern Mediterranean 1 (9 contributions), and Black Sea (3 contributions). The second volume presents the communications related to the ports of the Eastern Mediterranean 2 (12 contributions), Atlantic Ocean (14 contributions), River and Lake Ports (8), a work, as a whole, referential for those who want to deepen their knowledge of the network of ports that supported the largest system of control of the aquatic environment at a global level known to this day.
