From 1976-1998 he was a Fellow in Law at Worcester College, Oxford and member of the Law Faculty. He became a reader in law in 1990. From 1998-2019 he was Professor of English Law, St John's College, Oxford. In 1998 he was elected a Fellow of the British Academy and in 2000 was made an Honorary Bencher of Gray's Inn and a QC (Honoris Causa). From 2010-2019 he was the alternate UK member of the Venice Commission on Law and Democracy.
