OverviewThis dissertation details the synthesis and properties of thin films and devices based on multiferroic materials. The primary advances made as a result of the work described herein are the growth and characterization of thin films of the candidate multiferroic PbVO3, the growth and nanoscale domain control of the model multiferroic BiFeO3 through a number of methods, the growth and detailed characterization of exchange heterostructures based on Co0.9Fe0.1/BiFeO 3, the correlation of ferroelectric domain structure in BiFeO3 to the exchange bias properties exhibited, discussion of the mechanism for these varied properties, and the first evidence for electrical control of ferromagnetism with a multiferroic material at room temperature.
