Overview

This book broaches a hitherto unexplored subject. It is a systematic overview of the domestic implementation or enforcement of Inter-American Court of Human Rights Judgments across all the countries that accept its jurisdiction. This book urges (and allows) us to move beyond the discourse of ""influence"" of international courts, a discourse that, while helpful in some respects, also has limited usefulness for the victims of human rights violations in judgments. Comprehensive and theoretically sophisticated, this book sheds new light into how human rights law, international courts, and even international law more broadly can in fact be transformative on the ground.

Author Information

Ayla do Vale Alves is a Lecturer in Law at the University of South Australia.Ayla holds a PhD in Law from UNSW Sydney (Australia), an LLM in International Human Rights Laws from the University of Liverpool (England), and Bachelor of Laws (LLB, Hons equivalent) from the State University of Feira de Santana (Brazil). Her teaching and research expertise includes human rights law and regional human rights systems, public and private international law, cultural heritage law, legal research and writing, and Indigenous peoples' rights. Ayla is a coordinator of the Latin American and Caribbean Chapter of the Association of Critical Heritage Studies. She also has practical legal experience from working as a Judicial Clerk at the European Court of Human Rights (Strasbourg, France). Lucas Lixinski is Professor at the Faculty of Law & Justice, UNSW Sydney. He holds a PhD in Law from the European University Institute (Florence, Italy), an LLM in Human Rights Law from Central European University (Budapest, Hungary), and an LLB from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (Porto Alegre, Brazil). He teaches and researches across a range of fields in international law, particularly international human rights adjudication, cultural heritage law, and international legal history. He is also the Director of Studies globally for the International Law Association.
