Overview

I wrote this book from my childhood perspective of what transpired from the sky over England during World War II. It describes major air battles fought in the English sky, starting with the The Battle of Britain, which was fought mainly over the Kent countryside. The R.A.F. helped prevent the Luftwaffe from destroying the English air bases and aircraft on the ground. The Luftwaffe was helping to prepare for a German invasion of Britain. The Battle of Britain ultimately saved England from invasion by German paratroopers, and by sea from northern France through south and southwest England, Operation Sealion. The R.A.F. had help from many pilots who volunteered from the British Dominion and other allied nations, including the U.S.A. Without this aid, the Nazis inevitably would have invaded the British Isles. Despite this vital aid, daily and nightly bombings by the German Luftwaffe took place over London and other major British cities. This aerial bombardment was The Blitz. I would like to dedicate my book to the memory of my beloved father, who was a Squadron Leader in the Royal Air Force, attached to Fighter Command, during World War II. He passed away in July 1956, and also to my beloved mother, who passed away in August 1987. She was my best friend throughout my adult life. She worked very hard to keep things running smoothly in our home, during very difficult times of all our lives. To Mary Elizabeth Spreitzer: Thank you for inspiring me to write my story. The recent publication of your book helped me with my decision to write this book. I also thank my eldest son for his skillful editing of my manuscript prior to submission.
