Endangered Species: The Power, Survival, and Rise of Black Women

Overview

The concept behind Endangered Species is rooted in both lived experience and intellectual inquiry. The title itself functions as a metaphor rather than a biological reference. It reflects the historical positioning of Black women within society, simultaneously erased, exploited, feared, and yet profoundly resilient. The framing of this metaphor aligns with established scholarship within the fields of intersectionality, critical race theory, and Black feminist thought, including the foundational work of scholars such as Kimberlé Crenshaw, Patricia Hill Collins, and Bell hooks. These scholars have long examined how systems of race, gender, and power intersect to shape the lived experiences of Black women in ways that are both complex and unique. This book builds upon that intellectual foundation. It argues that Black women have historically been treated as socially expendable within many institutions, yet paradoxically remain one of the most resilient and transformative forces in society. Through collective struggle, community, and unwavering determination, Black women have repeatedly redefined power, leadership, and identity. The narrative that unfolds in these pages is structured around several central themes that appear consistently throughout the book: The intersection of racism and sexism, economic exclusion, and the persistent invisibility Black women often experience within professional and institutional spaces. The well-documented phenomenon is that Black women frequently must work significantly harder to achieve the same recognition or opportunity within systems that were not designed with their success in mind. The journey of growing up within communities often shaped by systemic barriers, violence, poverty, addiction, and underinvestment, and transforming those experiences into leadership and purpose. The critical role of community bonds between Black women and the importance of intergenerational mentorship. The powerful act of rejecting narratives imposed by society and learning to embrace Black womanhood unapologetically. While these themes are grounded in scholarship, they are also deeply personal. I was raised by a collective of extraordinary Black women. These women were not supported by systems designed to uplift them. In many ways, they were forced to build stability and opportunity for themselves and their families despite structural barriers that often worked against them. Yet they never complained. They understood something larger than themselves. They had an assignment. That assignment was to ensure that I would not have to struggle the way they did. Because of their sacrifices, I have never experienced the kind of financial instability that so many families face. They instilled in me principles that shaped every stage of my life: education, discipline, work ethic, financial responsibility, self-respect, and self-love. Just as those women invested in my future, I have done the same for my daughter and countless others. From an early age, I taught my daughter Ja'Nye the importance of entrepreneurship and economic independence. I wanted her to understand that even when systems attempt to create barriers, creativity and determination can open doors that institutions try to keep closed. A cycle of Black women preparing the next generation of queens to rise. This book exists as part of that continuum. It is both a tribute to the women who came before me and a message to the women who will come after. The story of Black women has never been one of disappearance. It has always been one of persistence, brilliance, and transformation. And the work is far from finished.
