John Witmer is a writer from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His memoir explores faith, family, and the complicated path from youthful belief to adult reflection. While in college, Witmer joined a religious cult that rejected medical science and believed the end of the world was imminent. Drawing on his experiences in a high-control church environment, he examines what drew him into the group, what kept him there, and the circumstances that led him out.
