END of GLOBALIZATION?: End of Globalization and Digitalism

Overview

With love, longing, and respect in memory of Arif Dirlik on the 10th anniversary of his death, this book is published in English for the first time by Veysel Batmaz ""The essays in this volume were initially written as conference papers over the last two years. They were sent to Professor Veysel Batmaz to be published in book form, firstly in Turkish, by me. They develop further arguments first proposed in my book, Global Modernity: Modernity in the Age of Global Capitalism (2006). The issues taken up in the essays offer different windows on ""global modernity,"" a descriptive conceptualization of the world that has emerged from the most recent episode of globalization. As a concept, it seeks to comprehend a new phase in the unfolding of modernity when modernity has gone global only to be fragmented into claims to ""alternative"" or ""multiple"" modernities in competition, if not at war with one another. The essays engage Panglossian celebrations of phenomena associated with globalization as harbingers of a new age of cosmopolitan and egalitarian global civilization that would do away with the economic, social, and ethnic injustices of modernity, with its entanglements in colonialism-a colonial modernity with Euro/America at its core. They argue, to the contrary, that this most recent episode of globalization not only has not eliminated earlier inequalities and divisions among peoples, it also has resurrected seemingly dormant divisions, created new ones of its own, and deepened inequalities transnationally. The globalization I am referring to here is that of the last three decades, which has been driven by a neoliberal reconfiguration of national economies across the globe, including in formerly socialist states, that, through new technologies of management, communications, production, and consumption, has opened all global spaces to penetration by the political economy and cultures of capitalism.""
