Schaefer received his B.A. from Northwestern University and his M.A and Ph.D. from The University of Chicago in sociology. He has been with DePaul since 1997, and was the chair of the Department of Sociology from 1997 to 2003. He has published over 30 titles in sociology, many that have gone through numerous editions, and is a prolific author of journal articles and scholarly papers. His most recent award was his nomination for the 2000 Teaching Excellence Award, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at DePaul University.
