OverviewEnabling and leading students to embrace plurilingualism implies a mindset shift. Because handling languages and cultures interculturally has increasingly been recognized as an essential soft skill in the 21st century, this skill requires dismantling colonial frameworks that have hindered language learning. This book reimagines what it means to be an intentional polyglot (not as achieving perfection across multiple languages, but as developing an intentional, fluid plurilinguistic repertoire that serves communication and human connection). This transformative pedagogical journey begins with grammatical literacy and linguistic awareness, expanding into cross-linguistic awareness, broader language awareness, and ultimately effective metacognitive multiple language learning. This progression challenges the obsession with test-taking and certification that reduces language to measurable paper trails rather than living means for cultural interaction. Rejecting ""native-speakerism"" as a colonial fixation disconnected from effective, socially-conscious plurilingualism and intelligibility is a key component of the path to becoming a polyglot. Instead, translanguaging and receptive multilingualism, including intercomprehension strategies and high tolerance for ambiguity, become liberatory decolonial practices. These validate learners' existing knowledge while building humanistic bridges across diverse communities. Indigenous and heritage language revitalization efforts can greatly benefit from this framework by validating marginalized community-based literacies. The presenter will explore decolonial epistemologies and interculturality as pathways to authentic plurilingualism, integrating multiple intelligences, including emotional intelligence, to create inclusive spaces where diversity strengthens learning. The book proposes an innovative methodology for autonomy and self-regulation while addressing intercultural plurilingual competence (accent variations, customs, and beliefs). There are practical tools for language educators committed to nurturing intentional polyglots who view plurilingual development as nurturing empathy, solidarity, cultural preservation, and transformative justice in a multipolar 21st century.
