Emotional Component of Infertility: The Role of the Counselling Psychologist

Overview

At present, the role of an infertility counsellor is seen, by most clinics, as one of evaluation rather than supportive. As such, the value of such a role is not justly appreciated. There are telltale signs are that this may change in future, and with this, the infertile patients may come to be viewed not just as patients but as people who are going through one of the greatest traumas in their lives and need support after medical treatment has been completed. At times, even when the treatment is successful, there is an element of posttraumatic stress which may be disguised in various forms and may linger for a lengthy period. For this reason, continuous support should be offered to patients seeking (or those who have completed) fertility treatment should they need it. Making babies is not a simple, natural task for these patients. Because of infertility it has become a major issue in their lives, and probably the one that will never be forgotten.

Author Information

Dr. Andjelka Stones was born in Belgrade; however she has spent most of her adult life in the UK, USA and Spain. Both of her parents are academics and it was only natural that she pursued a similar career path and currently works for NCU, AZ, USA as an Adjunct Professor. An eternal student, she obtained a degree in Statistics, specialised in Medical Statistics, and later obtained another degree in Life Sciences with a Psychological Sciences pathway. Her PhD and most of her research was in Psychophysiology in panic attacks. Andjelka lectured for many years at the University of Westminster, London, UK as well as working in clinical settings. Andjelka has 3 children, the youngest born in year 2000. Nevertheless, she seems to always find time for charity work and is tireless when helping people. She is a committed idealist believing that a strong emphasis on materialism leaves no room for spiritual growth sometimes at a personal cost. Mr. G. Pongratz
