Overview

The focus of this text arose from concern among US Army scientists that traditional nutrition research centred more on complex issues of maintenance or enhancement of performance and might not be sufficiently substantive to either measure changes in performance or to predict the effects on performance of the stresses that soldiers commonly experience in operational environments.evaluate technologies to determine whether they could help resolve the important issues in millitary nutrition research. This book contains the committee's summary and recommendations as well as individually authored chapters based on presentations at a workshop. Chapters cover tecniques of body composition asssessment, tracer techniques for the study of metabolism, ambulatory techniques for the determination of energy expenditure, molecular and cellular approaches to nutrition, assessment of immune functions, and functional and behavioural measures of nutritional status.
