His research focuses on maritime history as well as the history of crime and society in modern China. In addition to many articles on piracy in Asian and world history, he has published two other books on pirates, Like Froth Floating on the Sea: The World of Pirates and Seafarers in Late Imperial South China (2003) and Pirates in the Age of Sail (2007).
