As a teenage actor, I tried to conjure some measure of confidence before auditions, telling myself that my thick accent lent me character. It was a chump move, and I spent years spinning my wheels. My accent was disqualifying me from earning a living, and the frustration I felt drove me to the razor's edge of sanity. So I did something about it. I took classes, found a private coach, read books on the subject, and modeled my speech after American actors I admired. When I next spoke in an acting workshop, I brought the room to a momentary standstill, triggering loud whoops from my peers. A few years later, a job opened up at Los Angeles City College teaching accent reduction. I jumped at the opportunity. Helping bewildered professionals find their way to clear speech has been a nice way to spend the last two decades. Tab Content 6Author Website:Countries AvailableAll regions |
