Table of ContentsReviewsFormat: Paperback If you want to give a special Christmas gift for your children/grandchildren, I highly recommend Dwyn Mounger's book, Elihu, The Innkeeper's Son. Mounger has written the story in poetic verse, a style reader friendly for children. His colorful description of the barnyard cave, Joseph pounding at the door of the Inn, the million stars on that holy night, the kindness of Elihu, would easily catch a child's attention. The book is beautifully illustrated in color by Gloria Weisz. Mounger's narrative does not gloss over the dark side of Christmas, as he describes the commotion of the noisy mob in the Inn, the pain of Mary's birth, and the fact that Jesus was born in God's backyard. It also redeems the Innkeeper, who usually suffers from a bad press as the villain of the story. I love the way Mounger describes the kindness of Elihu who did what he could to provide hospitality for this strange couple. So often children only hear about the adults at Christmas, but this story provides a way they can identify with a small boy, and more importantly, the Christ child Dr. Richard L.
