Estrenada el 7 de marzo de 1843, la obra relata la historia de un eremita, a quien se le revela la futura muerte del rey Rodrigo a manos del Conde don Julian, quien se ha aliado con los arabes para facilitarles la conquista de Espana. Theudia, un siervo del rey, mata al Conde, muestra lo falso de los augurios y anima a Rodrigo a recuperar su trono. La obra mitifica la derrota del rey Rodrigo en Guadalete, antesala de la penetracion del islam en la peninsula.
