Hasta la redacción de la Vulgata, alrededor del año 400, los primeros seguidores de Cristo la mencionaban abiertamente en sus textos y la aceptaban como real. Después de la Vulgata, cayó en el olvido. Sin embargo, el libro es muy interesante y parece real. El libro de Enoc sólo se ha conservado en una copia, en su totalidad, en etíope y por esta razón también se llama el Enoc etíope.
