Francis Scott Fitzgerald nació en St. Paul (Minnesota) en 1896. A los doce años vio cómo Procter & Gamble despedía a su padre y complicaba las finanzas de su familia. Fue estudiante en Princeton, se enroló en el ejército y durante su entrenamiento militar en Alabama conoció al amor de su vida: Zelda Sayre. Por temor a morir en la guerra escribió a toda velocidad la novela que le daría la fama: A este lado del paraíso (1920). Logró casarse con Zelda y convertirse con ella en epítomes de la ""Generación Perdida"", como la bautizó Gertrude Stein. Ninguna de sus novelas repitió el éxito inicial, pero tres de ellas hoy son clásicos: El gran Gatsby (1925), Tierna es la noche (1934) y la póstuma El último magnate (1941), así como muchos de sus cuentos y el extraordinario ensayo autobiográfico El crack-up (1945). At the age of twelve, he witnessed Procter & Gamble dismiss his father, complicating the family's finances. He studied at Princeton, enlisted in the army, and during his military training in Alabama met the love of his life: Zelda Sayre. Fearing he might die in the war, he quickly wrote the novel that would bring him fame: This Side of Paradise (1920). He married Zelda and together they became epitomes of the ""Lost Generation"", as Gertrude Stein named it. None of his later novels repeated the initial success, but three of them are now considered classics: The Great Gatsby (1925), Tender Is the Night (1934), and the posthumous The Last Tycoon (1941), along with many of his short stories and the extraordinary autobiographical essay The Crack-Up (1945). After committing Zelda to a psychiatric hospital, he died in Hollywood, bankrupt, at the age of forty-four.
