Arthur Koestler nació en Budapest en 1905. Estudió en la Universidad de Viena antes de empezar a trabajar como corresponsal en Oriente Próximo, Berlín y París. Durante seis años fue un miembro activo del Partido Comunista y fue encarcelado por el gobierno de Franco tras la caída de Málaga en la guerra civil española, sobre la que había escrito para el diario inglés News Chronicle. En 1940 se instaló en Inglaterra y empezó a escribir su variada obra, que comprende novelas y ensayos científicos, filosóficos y políticos. Enfermo de leucemia y párkinson, se suicidó junto con su mujer en 1983, tras mostrar su ferviente creencia en el derecho a la eutanasia. Entre sus obras destacan las novelas Los gladiadores (1939) y El cero y el infinito (1941); los ensayos Reflexiones sobre la horca (1956), Los sonámbulos (1959), The Ghost in the Machine (1968) y Jano (1978); y su autobiografía dividida en dos volúmenes, Flecha en el azul (1952) y La escritura invisible (1954), recogidos en sus Memorias (Lumen, 2011, 2023).
