OverviewThis book is the published proceedings of the workshop organised by the Czech Institute of Egyptology, Czech Academy of Sciences and Institute of Egyptology, University of Vienna. Papers deal with many topics, including the presence of Europeans, especially people from the former Hapsburg monarchy, in Egypt, but also of Egyptians and people of Middle Eastern origin in Central and Eastern Europe. Special attention is paid to scholarly travel and expeditions. The history of travel in Egypt is also addressed, as well as politics, art history and cultural history. A selection of papers deal with special aspects of Egyptomania, such as the presence of Egypt in European funerary art, the impact of Egypt in Renaissance culture, or the presence of Egypt in education. Two exceptional contributions by A Lant (on sphinxes in silent cinema) and by J Janak (the Austrian ibises) bring new perspectives to our perception of relations between the West and the East.
