"This thesis of doctoral studies (PhD) is submitted to Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University, Ahmedabad on the topic ""A Study of Social Media Exposure on Children and Its Impact on Their Family in Gujarat"". It is based on a study of the children of Gujarat state about their usage of social media and its effects on their family. Primary data has been collected through a structured questionnaire and secondary data is taken from several published sources. This chapter of the thesis covers introduction to the topic, its relevance and definitions of frequently used terms in the study, and an overview of the origin and history of social networking services. The increased role of technology and media in our lives is no surprise today, as the lifestyle includes many equipments and services which require use of computers and internet. The invention of social networking and different platforms for social networking has further led to many fold effects on social and personal lives, such as the availability of cellphones and some advanced equipments in that category which prepossess the utilities."
