OverviewAppendicectomy is a widely performed surgical procedure worldwide. The prevalence of appendicectomy has increased in the past few decades owing to a multitude of variables, such as a poor diet, particularly among the younger population who lead lives of motionlessness. Due to this specific factor, the problems and incidence related to appendicectomy, whether performed by open surgery or laparoscopy, are now on the rise. Up to 5% of patients are said to experience post-operative paralytic ileus, which results in stomach distension, vomiting that causes the patient tremendous distress, and a lengthy hospital stay that necessitates a number of procedures. Patient satisfaction scores have decreased, there is a greater need for painkillers, and as a result, healthcare costs have climbed. With the implementation of ERAS procedures in surgery, early feeding schedules have received special attention. However, very few doctors are reluctant to begin oral feeding at a young age. Additionally, 20% or more of patients cannot tolerate early feeding. Gum chewing alone increases saliva production and stimulates the muscles of the stomach and intestines as well as the neuro-humoral system. By boosting the stomach's motor activity, this in turn promotes quicker gastric emptying.
