He has carried out extensive research on teacher agency in primary schools, schooling for girls, discriminatory practices in schools, and the social context of learning and achievement in elementary education. His areas of teaching and research interests cover the sociology of education, youth, and of India. He is presently engaged in national and international projects on the comparative sociologies of schooling and anthropology of youth cultures in contemporary India. His publications cover the sociology of education and youth studies. He is currently an Associate Research Fellow at the Department of Sociology, University of Johannesburg, South Africa.
