Edme Bouchardon is a famous French sculptor of the 18th century and commissioning artist for King Louis XV. He encouraged a return to classical ideals in art and had a considerable influence upon his contemporaries. Although only some of his sculptures still exist today, a multitude of his other artwork including paintings and sketches have been preserved.

Charles-Nicolas Cochin is a French draughtsman and engraver from the 18th century. A member of the Royal Academcy of Painting and Sculpture, he became the King s art administrator and historiographer as well as succeeding as keeper of the King s drawings. As a theoretician and art critic, he wrote the unpublished memoirs on Bouchardon, the Count de Caylus, and the Slodtzs as well as many other art related books and letters.
