OverviewThe text addresses the relevance of wild edible mushrooms in Mexico from a cultural, economic and ecological point of view. It examines their presence in markets in the center of the country and shows how their commercialization represents an essential subsistence strategy for rural communities, although the work and knowledge of the collectors is often underestimated. It highlights the richness of traditional knowledge transmitted intergenerationally, with complex systems of classification and cultural uses deeply linked to the identity of the people. This heritage faces growing risks due to migration, the loss of native languages and the lack of knowledge of current regulations. The ecological role of fungi in forest regeneration and in improving soil fertility is also highlighted. Finally, the urgency of policies that articulate environmental conservation with economic justice and cultural preservation is raised.
