Economics of Natural Resources, the Environment and Policies

Overview

There is a growing international interest in and concern about natural resource economics and the environment. The economic activities of humans, during the last 200 years in particular, have had a profound impact on the environment. Reckless depletion of the world's forest resources, fish stocks and fossil fuel deposits has raised many moral as well as political questions. Furthermore, environmental problems such as acid rain, the greenhouse effect of atmospheric pollution and destruction of the earth's ozone layer are causing wide concern internationally. This second edition takes an updated look in detail at the history of economic thought on natural resources and the environment, the economics of fisheries, forestry, mining, petroleum, coal and natural gas deposits, there are also chapters devoted to environmental degradation and the economics of the world's natural wonders. A key element in the book's contents is the application of the author's own theory of modified discounting to specific examples of natural resource depletion. ""Economics of Natural Resources and the Environment"" provides information, detailed analyses, projections and theories which are relevant to the work of environmental scientists, agricultural economists, fisheries scientists, marine biologists and managers in the forestry, fishing mining and petroleum industries.

Reviews

Its lucid style should gain an appreciative audience and its coverage will provide the reader with firm foundation in economic reasoning and analytical ability in environmental and natural resource issues ... should appeal to undergraduates across a wide range of disciplines, not only in economics and environmental science, but also in countryside management, town planning and related courses - Journal of Environmental Planning and Management; A refreshing aspect of Kula's coverage of the economics of natural resources and the environment is his integration of current policy with formal theory, which draws theory alongside the practical issues and problems of resource use. To do this successfully and maintain the manageability of the volume is obviously a difficult objective, yet is one at which he more or less succeeds. - Environment and Planning B: Planning and Design; ...provides an in-depth and well balanced coverage of its subject matter - Biodiversity and Conservation; This is a much expanded and comprehensively updated second edition of what has deservedly become a very popular text...[it is] an excellent book - The Journal of Energy Literature; The work is aimed at final year undergraduates in a wide range of disciplines, not just economics and environmental science. It provides information, analysses, projections and theories which are relevant to the work of economists, environmental scientists, development studies experts, agriculture and fisheries scientists, town and country planners and managers in the mining and petroleum industries. - IMM Abstracts; This is a fully updated and much expanded edition of the important and well received book Economics of Natural Resources and the Environment....deserves a readership beyond that of students...Recommended reading. - Environmental Policy and Planning
